A Decade of Augustinian Excellence: USAPMTIAA Marks 10th Founding Anniversary in Florida
What began ten years ago as a small group of passionate alumni reconnecting across continents has blossomed into a thriving international community. This summer, the University of San Agustin Pharmacy and Medical Technology International Alumni Association (USAPMTIAA) celebrated its 10th founding anniversary with a heartwarming and joy-filled three-day reunion in Orlando, Florida, from June 27 to 29, 2025.
Eighty-five alumni, along with their families and guests, traveled from across the United States, Canada, and the Philippines to commemorate this milestone, rekindle friendships, and reaffirm the legacy they share from their formative years at San Agustin.
A Gathering of Hearts and Minds
Held at the Westgate Town Resort and Vacation Villas, the event was more than a reunion—it was a homecoming rooted in shared values, vision, and vibrant memories. The celebration was graced by distinguished university dignitaries, including Fr. Arnel Dizon, OSA, University President, and Fr. Jonas Mejares, OSA, Vice President for Formation and Mission and Regent of the College of Pharmacy and Medical Technology (CPMT). Their presence—alongside former faculty members, administrators, and accomplished alumni—was a powerful testament to the enduring bond between the University of San Agustin and its graduates.
One of the most stirring moments came from Prof. Lerma Dela Llana Paris, BSMT Class of 1988 alumna and former CPMT dean, who now holds the distinction of PAMET Diplomate in Clinical Laboratory Management. Her keynote speech was both heartfelt and inspiring, moving many to tears as she reflected on leadership, service, and the lasting imprint of Augustinian values.
Where Heritage Meets Hospitality
The weekend kicked off on Friday, June 27, with registration and a casual welcome at the resort, followed by a walking tour of Downtown Kissimmee. Though Florida’s notorious summer downpour cut the outdoor excursion short, spirits remained high. The group reconvened for a festive dinner at Nipa Hut & Bar, a local Filipino favorite, where nostalgic dishes like bulalo, pancit canton, buchi, and San Miguel Beer brought back memories of home. A heartwarming surprise greeted guests when one of the restaurant workers revealed herself to be a fellow Augustinian alumna, sparking cheers, laughter, and spontaneous reunions.
Later that evening, Fr. Arnel presented updates on the university’s latest developments, while Fr. Jonas offered moving reflections on the importance of formation, mission, and faith in alumni life across generations.
Remembering the Past, Honoring the Present
On Saturday, the group made a solemn visit to the Bataan Monument, a symbolic tribute to the courage and sacrifice of Filipino soldiers during World War II. The emotional resonance of the memorial was balanced by a lighthearted airboat adventure through Florida’s wetlands at Boggy Creek Airboat Adventures, where participants encountered native wildlife and shared laughter under the Florida sun.
After lunch at Ichiban Buffet, alumni took time to rest and reconnect in smaller groups, while the 2023–2025 Board of Directors worked behind the scenes to transform the resort into a venue fit for the evening’s crown jewel: the Gala and Awards Night.
Gala Night: A Legacy Illuminated
As the ballroom lights dimmed and music filled the air, attendees stepped into an evening of elegance, dressed in their finest Barong Tagalog and Filipiniana gowns. The Gala Night paid tribute to alumni whose contributions have uplifted both the profession and the association’s mission. Among the honors bestowed were:
Founding Service Awards: Presented to Dr. Marlon Torrento, Eldino Defensor, Jemm Fos, and Shirley Cordova Chahu, in recognition of their unwavering dedication since the association’s founding.
Golden Jubilarian Award: Presented to Majella Celiz (BSMT Class of 1965), honoring her lifelong commitment to her alma mater’s values and vision.
The evening’s emotional high point came once again from Prof. Lerma Dela Llana Paris, whose message served as both celebration and call to action—a heartfelt reminder that the mission of service, humility, and excellence continues far beyond graduation.
Giving Back: A Cause That Connects
True to the Augustinian spirit of service, the gala also served as a platform for giving back. A 50/50 fundraising raffle raised $1,200, with $600 generously donated by Gary Hallam, the partner of an alumnus, to the Teaching Microscope Project under the CPMT Educational Enhancement Initiative. His donation earned him the distinction of Gold Donor. The donor tiers are: Gold ($300 or more), Silver ($200), and Bronze ($100).
All contributors will be honored on a permanent donor wall plaque in the Teaching Microscope Room at the CPMT campus—an enduring tribute to alumni generosity and support.
A Stylish Finale
The celebration concluded in flair with the Best Dressed Awards, with top honors going to Gregg Lozada and Delia Serra. Honorable mentions included Christopher Bautista, Ray Monsale, Valerie Madamba, and Sheryl De Sagun. The ballroom buzzed with music, dancing, and laughter—memories in the making for a generation of Augustinians whose ties have only grown stronger over time.
Looking Ahead: Chicago 2027
On Sunday, the reunion wrapped up with a hearty All-American breakfast, where hugs, selfies, and farewells filled the air. Attendees exchanged contact details, made plans to stay connected, and offered renewed commitment to USAPMTIAA’s future efforts.
With the 2025–2027 Board of Directors now elected, the association looks forward to its 5th Biennial Medical Reunion, to be held in Chicago, Illinois, in 2027—another chapter in a growing legacy.
Ten Years Strong—And Just Getting Started
Now ten years in, USAPMTIAA stands not only as a professional organization, but as a global family—bound by shared history, enduring friendships, and a deep love for the red and gold halls of San Agustin. This Orlando reunion wasn’t just a reflection of the past—it was a recommitment to a vibrant future. As Fr. Jonas Mejares reminded all: “We are not only alumni—we are torchbearers of a legacy worth carrying forward.”
